Error Message: XML support is not enabled ?

I am trying to work with FreeMed to determine if it will suit our needs for PM/EMR software. So far I am impressed with what it offers compared to the overpriced, proprietary commercial packages. But I am running into a problem that would definitely need to be resolved before we switch to FreeMed.

If I go to the Billing Functions then to Patient Statements, both the PostScript and the PDF options give me the same result - a blank page with the following message printed twice:

Message: XML support is not enabled
Message: XML support is not enabled

I installed FreeMed 0.8.4-1 (stable) and Remitt 0.3.3-1 on Debian Etch 4.0 (stable) with MySQL 5.0.32-7etch1 and PHP4 6:4.4.4-8+etch4 and am running it in a VMWare session. I installed according to the instructions and other functions seem to work fine, except the date format won't change to match what I set it for in the configuration menu (MM-DD-YYYY).

I have a very basic, self-taught knowledge of Linux and PHP-MySQL, so my own trouble-shooting efforts have fallen flat. If anyone knows the answer to this issue or can give me hints on what to look at, I would very much appreciate it.
